Nursing News Now: Crush the Crisis breaks collection record

Sammie Mosier, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive

With gratitude and humility

It’s hard to believe the year end is upon us, another year that brought new challenges to the healthcare industry and nurses. Staffing, supply chain and other headwinds presented barriers that might have crippled our ability to care for patients. And yet again, you persevered. Your dedication in the face of adversity fills me with gratitude, and I am inspired by your commitment to providing compassionate care in spite of difficult circumstances.

I am proud of our 2022 achievements, and that nurse engagement and retention are up. We diversified our teams’ skill mix through alternative care models to help nurses spend more time practicing at top of license, and launched technology initiatives to reduce nurse burden and improve workflow. And we added six Galen College of Nursing campuses, with nine more approved for 2023.

We furthered our Advocacy and Leadership work through CNO and ACNO development, as well as our shared governance efforts through Advisory Groups, a Facilities SG relaunch, and our CNO & Physician Cabinet. In Staffing and Care Team Support, we bolstered our Operations Team and SWOT process, launched new Nurse Resource Councils, and focused on technology such as Tele-NATE, PK for Nursing, Wound Care Imaging, CTA and Mobilab.

Our aforementioned progress with Galen is a cornerstone of efforts to advance Education and Academic Partnerships, with a reinforced focus on that as well as other academic partnerships, and we have a redesigned new graduate transition with our StaRN and Residence programs. In the Professional Practice arena, we strengthened our focus on patient safety with nurse safe tables and action planning as well as a new nursing benchmarking tool. And we celebrated an overwhelming number of teams through our Unit of Distinction program this year.

Looking ahead

As we celebrate these accomplishments, we will approach the next year with humility and anticipation for how we will improve nursing practice together. Some areas of focus for 2023 are outlined below.

  • Advocacy and Leadership: Elevate Clinical Nurse Coordinator role to support operations and new nurse transition, and adopt a Mentorship Program to support nurse transition
  • Staffing and Care Team Support: Support new nurse transition with Resource Nurses and technology; improve retention through execution of High Impact Practices; and improve efficiency via Admit and Discharge Support and PSA NATE adoption
  • Education and Academic Partnerships: Implement Division Academic Partnership Governance and Standardized Plan; transition to StaRN and Residency refresh to strengthen student transition to practice
  • Professional Practice: Hardwire Mobility practices to improve Nurse Sensitive Indicators, and reintroduce Nurse Leader Rounding best practices to improve inpatient experience

I cannot overstate my appreciation for you, nor how proud I feel of our nursing teams. I look forward to working with you in the new year, and hope you find time to relax and recharge during the holiday season.

Leveraging technologies and supporting our nurses’ experience in 2022

  • iMobile - 45,000 iPhones in 83 facilities refreshed
  • Wound Image Capture - took wound images and sent it directly to the medical record, reducing documentation time for nurses by 20 minutes per picture
  • PatientKeeper Link and Launch - added a direct view to Meditech from iMobile phones, saving nurses log in time
  • MobiLab - bedside patient identification and specimen labeling, used through iMobile, eliminates handwriting the date, time and initials and reduces phone calls between care teams, continuing deployment through 2023
  • Virtual care teams - being piloted to provide additional support in the areas of admission and discharge with some hospitals already integrated and others launching in 2023

The use of technology will continue to grow in 2023 to reduce burden on nurses and provide a more efficient care environment. Thank you for your adoption and use of these advancements in how we provide care to our patients.
