Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive

September is National Suicide Prevention month, and I want to pause for a moment to say, as an organization and as a nursing leader, your mental wellness and health matter. You bring a unique set of experiences that contribute to your colleagues, your family, our organization and the nursing practice. HCA Healthcare, your leaders and colleagues are here to support you.

One of the ways HCA Healthcare is focusing on clinician wellness is through the research of the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation. Their research shows that many healthcare professionals refrain from pursuing necessary mental health treatment due to intrusive and stigmatizing language in applications and questionnaires. Colleagues should never feel that pursuing mental health-related treatment would put their careers at risk. Compliance with standards established by the foundation has earned HCA Healthcare recognition by the ALL IN: Wellbeing First for Healthcare coalition as a Wellbeing First Champion for 2024.

The Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Act  was signed into law by President Biden in 2022 and is in effect throughout our organization. Please pursue mental health treatment options without fear of risking your career.

Thank you for sharing your talents, personality and passion each day. I am thankful to work with you and look forward to continuing to improve lives.

Nurse Forward Strategy

NVHAP quality improvement initiative

HCA Healthcare is taking a national lead in preventing non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NVHAP). Pneumonia is the number one hospital-acquired infection in the U.S., and most cases occur in non-ventilated patients. NVHAP may account for as much as 10% of in-hospital mortality. The good news is that new research suggests that risk of NVHAP can be reduced by following three easy steps: routine oral care, early mobility and patient education. It is now recognized that these simple, nontechnical, daily maneuvers may be lifesaving.

Pursuing an enterprise-wide initiative to emphasize the importance of ensuring every patient gets appropriate oral care (tooth brushing) and the opportunity to mobilize to the best of their ability, HCA Healthcare clinicians and leaders have access to data on compliance with these two key aspects of patient care, down to the unit level. The effort has been supported with educational materials targeting patients and clinicians and coaching calls with all divisions. Also, HCA Healthcare is partnering with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute to evaluate whether the focus on these maneuvers correlates with a decrease in NVHAP.

While less than a year into the active program, results show a 10% improvement in documentation of mobility and oral hygiene and a 5% decrease in NVHAP. Prevention of NVHAP will continue to be a key focus for patient safety in 2025, with HCA Healthcare setting an example for all other hospitals nationwide. Additional resources are available below.

Clinical and nursing dashboards: How to address access and troubleshoot common issues

“How-To” videos are now available in Clinical Services HEAL . These videos are short snippets intended to help users quickly solve commonly asked dashboard questions. These videos can be found in the Useful Links section of the HEAL page for future reference.

Please follow the steps associated with these scenarios:

Knowledge Center site migration

The Knowledge Center SharePoint site has migrated to a new platform. The new site is available here . Links from the old site will expire at the end of the year. This move will provide an enhanced user interface and streamlined evidence summary request process.

Links to individual evidence summaries will need to be updated. For example, if you have a link to a Knowledge Center evidence summary, guidance document or newsletter, it will need to be replaced with the corresponding link from the new site.
