Nursing Strategy Advocacy and Leadership Staffing and Care Team Support Education and Academic Partnerships Professional Practice Access the 2022 Nursing Strategy and resources. Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) is the most common Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) that affects ~1 in 200 patients, and has a mortality rate of 15-30% (accounts for 10% of hospital deaths). NV-HAP patients are five times more likely to die vs similar patients without NV-HAP. Due to complexities of identification (has generally been subjective), NV-HAP has been under-appreciated. New definitions, using standardized elements in the electronic record, are emerging and gaining acceptance. Two promising interventions shown to decrease occurrence by 30-50% are oral care (regular, rigorous, tooth brushing) and mobilization (facilitate early ambulation). Clinical education will be rolling out resources and materials to assist our care delivery team on the importance of these two interventions and the link to NV-HAP reduction. The eight videos address communication strategies, therapeutic interventions and best practices to ensure patient safety, and improve patient satisfaction and outcomes for this vulnerable patient population.
