HCA Healthcare is pleased to introduce and spotlight nursing colleague and leader, Henry Himpaphanh, RN. Henry is a clinical nurse leader in the Heart and Vascular Center at affiliate Medical City Arlington in Arlington, Texas.
Please take a few moments to read about his nursing career and the pathway he ook to become a nurse leader.
Why did you choose to be a nurse?
When I was younger, I remembered asking my father why my grandparents were frequently in and out the hospital and he could not explain what was going on due to a language barrier. Thus, I decided to become a nurse to help patients understand what is happening through listening and explaining.
When and where did you begin your career with HCA Healthcare?
I started as a new graduate in the nurse internship progra at Medical City Arlington in February 2017.
Have you taken on new roles since being hired?
I took on the role of fill-in charge nurse and nurse preceptor.
What have you learned about nursing during your career?
There are many opportunities in the nursing profession. I am very fortunate to have started my career at Medical City Arlington. Through the new roles I have taken on since being hired, I have experienced the endless opportunities to advance my career and grow in my clinical practice.
If you weren't a nurse, what would be your profession?
To be honest, I cannot imagine myself doing anything else. However, if I had a choice, I would probably be a software engineer or a chef.

#CareLikeFamily means to deliver care to those like family no matter how challenging it can be.
Tell us about a significant moment that made you proud to be a nurse.
There is not just one significant moment, but many small moments that makes me proud to be a
nurse every day; from being recognized by nurse leaders or physicians to making my patients smile.
What's your advice to nurses starting out?
My advice to nurses starting out is to remain curious and always ask questions. Asking questions demonstrates your willingness to learn from others and allows your voice to be heard.
