Sammie Mosier, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive
Nurses Week is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s a time to purposefully pause and
thank each of you for the incredible care you show for your patients and each other. You put your heart into everything you do. You show up with compassion and purpose to bring hope, strength and healing to every patient — no matter where they are in their care journey. Thank you for your tireless dedication to everyone we serve.
You are working hard to support and uplift our nursing strategy. This month, I want to take a moment to look at the ways our Education and Academic Partnership pillar can support you. This pillar aims to provide access to industry-leading education and career development opportunities to positively impact patient care. In 2023, our plan is to implement division academic partnership governance and standardized plan and strengthen our StaRN and residency program to meet the needs of the new nursing graduate.
We are working to expand the Galen College of Nursing opportunities. Galen offers MSN program options. With a reduced credit hour cost only for HCA Healthcare nurses, the total tuition is $12,600. If you are an RN with an Associates’ Degree in Nursing, you can complete your BSN tuition free. Galen’s online RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program can be completed in as few as 12 months. With 8-week courses and six starts per year, you have the flexibility to complete the program at your pace with zero out-of-pocket tuition.
We have invested in our Centers of Clinical Advancement, CCAs. These state-of-the-art simulation and learning centers allow our colleagues to expand their clinical knowledge in a safe and supported environment. The Clinical Certification Support Program (pre-paid certification voucher, test fee reimbursement and certification bonus) policy encourages colleagues to enhance and promote their professional growth for advancement by newly acquiring or recertifying nationally recognized certifications beyond those required for their current position.
I am honored to support you in your career journey. I’m grateful and excited to make a difference with you. Thank you for each moment, shift and care experience you provide. Happy Nurses Week!

Avoid medication delays with three easy entries.
Missing heights, weights and allergies are three of the most common reasons for pending medication orders.
Enter your patient’s height, weight and allergies ASAP to avoid medication delays.
When pharmacists do not have the information needed, the order is placed in “pending” status with a comment indicating what is required.
Pending comments can be viewed by clicking on the “Orders” button and looking under “Medications.”

Three steps to reducing non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia (NVHAP)
Pneumonia is the #1 hospital-acquired infection in the US and most cases occur in non-ventilated patients. However, it can be reduced by following three easy steps:
- Oral care Ask patients to brush their teeth and tongue (1-2 minutes), rinse their mouth (30 seconds) and apply non-petroleum-based lip moisturizer (after meals and before bedtime) 3-4x per day
- Early mobility Set personalized mobility goals with your patient during bedside shift report, identifying times each day to walk around or to increase movement
- Educate the patient on how important it is for them to do this every day of their stay to reduce their risk of NVHAP

New barcode scanners and equipment coming soon
The process to replace and refresh barcode scanners and equipment with new technology, selected using feedback and guidance from our nurses, began in 2022 and was slowed down due to supply chain issues. All facilities will have the new equipment by early 2024.
The new equipment has:
- Monitoring and reporting capabilities to proactively manage scanner health and support
- Quick charge technology with a full charge in seconds instead of hours for uninterrupted patient care
- High satisfaction marks at facilities that have already been refreshed
Until your refresh, please continue to report any bedside scanner and equipment issues via your normal IT help channels.
