Sammie Mosier

Nursing excellence at HCA Healthcare comes in many different forms. Executive, senior leaders across the enterprise witnessed your excellence first-hand on August 4, 2023 during the annual Walk in Your World event. Over 600 leaders spent time shadowing your great work. I want to thank all of the facility teams that hosted the corporate and division leaders. It was another successful event, and I look forward to sharing the key themes and observations with you in the future. The 2023 Nursing Capital investment was recently distributed to facilities across our organization. This investment is focused on advancing our working environments and will allow you to purchase equipment that improves nursing experience and patient care.

Another great example of our nursing excellence is through our Unit of Distinction program. Launched in 2015, this program celebrates the individual departments that are defining nursing excellence through nursing specific indicators and performance. These teams and leaders are actively partnering and collaborating with patient care teams to problem solve and create best practices within their local organizations.

This program highlights the ways nurses across our organization deliver safe, high-quality care with compassion and expertise. It also shows the positive outcomes from our nursing strategy and unites us all toward a common goal. Our nurses give voice to the needs of our patients and ensure our mission is lived out across our organization.

As we continue to raise the bar in our quality performance, we are also focused on growing our nurses.

The Clinical Certification Support program encourages, enhances and promotes the professional growth and clinical skill of all HCA Healthcare-affiliated colleagues who wish to improve their knowledge, skills and potential for advancement through achieving national-recognized certifications beyond those required for their current position. For more details, visit the SharePoint site.

I encourage everyone to take full advantage of these benefits. We are committed to growing you as a nurse, leader and community member, just as you are committed to our patients. Thank you for the incredible partnership we have in healthcare.

Nursing strategy

Workplace violence

In 2018, healthcare workers accounted for 73% of all nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses due to violence. Workplace violence is on the rise and has severe consequences for the entire healthcare system. HCA Healthcare’s physical security theft and violence policy defines workplace violence as “threats or acts of violence, aggressive behavior, offensive acts, threatening or offensive comments or remarks involving other employees, former employees, physicians, patients, volunteers, contractors, visitors or customers.”

HCA Healthcare Patient Safety Organization (PSO), in partnership with the corporate Workplace Violence Committee, is planning a 2023 Safe Table campaign that will focus on workplace violence. This campaign will run September 25 - October 6. The purpose of the campaign will be to intentionally give frontline colleagues, including staff, providers and leaders, the opportunity to share their concerns, needs and ideas related to workplace violence. Because these conversations will be held through the PSO, they will be federally protected, confidential and generally privileged from being pulled into legal proceedings. The feedback and information received through this campaign may be used at local, division/market/regional and enterprise levels to mitigate workplace violence and provide care for victims of workplace violence.

Please join in the conversations and encourage staff to do so too. Together, we can improve safety for our staff and patients.

Supporting your journey to success

HCA Healthcare is committed to your success, starting with a trusted and innovative resuscitation training program. Instead of a one-size-fits-all learning approach, the American Red Cross Resuscitation Suite automates a personalized learning plan for you based on a pre-assessment to truly optimize your time and knowledge retention. As of mid-July, your American Red Cross completion data is automatically uploaded into GHR within 24 hours of earning the certification. This means no need to submit proof of certification.

HCA Healthcare Foundation to introduce Girl Scouts Patch program this fall

The HCA Healthcare Foundation, in collaboration with Girl Scouts of the USA and the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is proud to create a Mental Wellness Patch Program for girls. Launching in fall of 2023, the patch program will teach girls in grades 4-12 about self-care, mental health conditions, coping skills and how to ask for help when they or others around them need it.

As we launch this exciting program, we would like to hear from our HCA Healthcare colleagues who have a connection to the Girl Scouts organization. If you or a family member have been involved in Girl Scouts, please fill out this short survey.
