In the fight against human trafficking
Every day, healthcare workers play a critical role in healing patients touched by community epidemics

like drug trafficking and domestic violence, but another often hidden in plain sight is human trafficking. In July we recognized World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, and HCA Healthcare shared how we are helping combat this silent epidemic through a new Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Program comprised of education, training and situational awareness for our frontline nurses, clinicians and other colleagues.

HCA Healthcare’s Enterprise Emergency Operations Center (EEOC) collaborates with local law enforcement and community-based providers to identify and intervene in situations where human trafficking is suspected. The EEOC teamed up with the National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center to provide online curriculum to HCA Healthcare colleagues to inform and enhance the public health response to human trafficking. Through the Center’s SOAR Online program, our nurses and other colleagues are learning how to:

• STOP: describe the types of trafficking and common risk factors
• OBSERVE: identify individuals and indicators involved in human trafficking
• ASK: screen and identify individuals who may have experienced trafficking using a trauma-informed, person-centered approach
• RESPOND: address individual needs by coordinating across multidisciplinary stakeholders to deliver appropriate services

These and other programs will give our teams tools to identify and safely intervene in suspected human trafficking situations. • The CNC Advisory Council met on July 26 for a full-day session with representatives from all divisions
• In attendance, 15 CNCs, five Directors/Managers and members from the corporate leadership team participated

Save the date: HCA Healthcare Crush the Crisis Opioid Take Back Day – October 29

HCA Healthcare will host its fourth annual enterprise-wide Crush the Crisis Opioid Take Back Day on Saturday, October 29 to align with DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Crush the Crisis Opioid Take Back Day events aim to educate our communities on the risk of opioid misuse, while providing a safe and anonymous way to dispose of medications that may be left over from previous procedures or other medical visits. HCA Healthcare affiliated hospitals will partner with local law enforcement agencies who will be onsite at each take back location to assist with the safe collection and appropriate disposal of unused and expired medication from the community.
