Celebrating hospital week
We hope each of you enjoyed wonderful hospital week celebrations! We thank you for being simply the best!
The Sacred Pause
The Sacred Pause is a moment to pay respect after a patient dies without family being present. The Sacred Pause allows caregivers to take comfort in their efforts and also assure a patient’s family that their loved one did not die alone. The Sacred Pause brings closure, prevents cumulative grief and distress, builds resilience, promotes team effort and improves professional satisfaction of healthcare colleagues.
Three key parts
- Recognition of the deceased as a person with a life and relationships
- Recognition of the team’s efforts to treat the patient
- A 30-60 second period of silence
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Bland Eng
Chief Executive Officer
Brandon Regional Hospital
(Brandon, Florida)
Each May, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month commemorates the vital contributions of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and native Hawaiians to the American story and recognizes the challenges many have faced along the way.
Over the past year, our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) colleagues, who make up approximately 8% of the workforce at
HCA Healthcare, have been impacted by the sharp increase in hate crimes and violence against their communities.
Even as the AAPI community experienced mistreatment and racism associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, those who are part of our
HCA Healthcare family have continued to make incredible contributions to our organization and communities, including serving at the forefront of efforts to curb the spread and impact of the virus.

Enterprise workforce health and safety program
At HCA Healthcare, our commitment to the care and improvement of human life includes a commitment to the health and safety of our own colleagues. Currently, there is not a consistent, accurate method to track or influence the health and wellbeing of our colleagues, including illness, injury, vaccination, harm, hospitalization or death, which is why the Workforce Health and Safety team is excited to begin work on an enterprise workforce health and safety program to align with the established industry best practice.

Congratulations to Leslie Gevedon
A J&J top nurse who disrupted healthcare through the COVID-19 pandemic
Amid a global pandemic, when the world needed their leadership in healthcare more than ever, nurses answered the call. Johnson & Johnson is celebrating National Nurses Month 2021 by sharing the stories of 15 nurse healthcare disruptors, just some of the many nurses who led the way through COVID-19. Throughout the past year, nurses like Leslie Gevedon, MS, RN of HCA Healthcare’s TriStar Division, stepped into entirely new roles to support COVID-19 prevention, treatment and vaccination efforts.
Text version of infographic: In 2020, 95 HCA Healthcare facilities located in 18 states hosted “Crush the Crisis” Opioid Take-Back events that resulted in the collection of 13,523 lbs. of unused and expired prescription medications, which is estimated to be 9.3 million doses
