Sammie Mosier, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive
Advocating for You
One of the most important responsibilities as a Chief Nurse Executive is advocating for the needs of our nurses and leaders. You are the engine that drives our organization, and it is one of my greatest privileges to represent your collective voice and drive meaningful change for you. Here are some ways we are striving to improve nursing practice, and your experience, at HCA Healthcare.
In June, many of our Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) participated in a 3-day CNO Leadership Development Workshop designed to provide tools, resources and a strong network to grow leadership skills. Participants gained an understanding of how to leverage technology and data to address staffing and turnover; access to key financial resources; best-in-class communication skills; executive exposure to enhance strategic relationships; and peer networking through workshops and presentation coaching labs.
Because nurse leadership and advocacy are key, in February we formed a CNO Council to develop innovative approaches to improve patient experience, collaborate on design and implementation of care delivery, improve nurse-sensitive outcomes and contribute to ongoing operational efficiency. This council meets bimonthly and includes a CNO from each division.
Our Adult Inpatient Advisory Board elevates the voice of nurse directors and managers to design new care solutions that integrate into existing workflows. By involving them in design sessions, innovation stems from the bedside rather than from those less proximal to patient care. This group meets regularly and includes critical care and med/surge nurse leaders, nursing operations leaders, education representatives and care process design facilitators.
At HCA Healthcare, we have 31,000 Clinical Nurse Coordinators (CNCs) who make quick decisions, evaluate care quality, resolve conflicts and anticipate problems every day. It is imperative that we listen to their voices, so we created a CNC Advisory Council, comprised of CNCs from our 15 divisions and five Acute Care Manager/Directors representing the larger Adult Inpatient Advisory Board. This council initially will convene for an in-depth design session on July 26th and continue to meet bimonthly thereafter.
Another example of teams advocating for nursing across our organization is Coding for Caregivers. We know nurses want more time at the bedside, less redundant work and more opportunity to apply expertise. Coding for Caregivers is a fast-track technology development event that leverages cross-functional teams (importantly, a partnership between nursing and our Information Technology Group) to design technology by and for you.
Of all the great submissions this year, we looked for opportunities to focus the team’s time and talents to quickly bring new solutions forward to improve efficiency and patient care. The winners were announced last Friday, but we will continue to review every idea for value and scale. Congratulations to two of this year’s winners!
