Sammie Mosier, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive
Nearly every year, nursing tops the lists of to the most trusted and respected professions in healthcare.
Earlier this month, executives and leaders from across HCA Healthcare got a chance to find out what it takes to be a nurse during our first Walk in Your World event.
HCA Healthcare leaders witnessed, first-hand, the care you provide to patients and your communities. Your strength and compassion were on full display. At all levels, we look forward to learning from your experience to streamline workflows and create efficiencies that give you more time at the bedside. Thank you so much for allowing executives to join your shifts, meet your patients, and learn from your invaluable experience!
We are analyzing feedback now and are excited to work toward putting your experiences and suggestions in to action. Across the enterprise, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
Your continued commitment everyday inspires me to do all that I can to make sure you have proper tools and resources not only to do your jobs now, but to set you up for a long-term successful career at HCA Healthcare. We are working to create an environment that allows you to practice and be at your best. Please continue to use your voice through your team meetings, engagement feedback, and shared governance councils to advocate for your needs.
Thank you for the work and passion you bring to every patient you serve!

Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia
Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) is the most common Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) that affects ~1 in 200 patients, and has a mortality rate of 15-30% (accounts for 10% of hospital deaths). NV-HAP patients are five times more likely to die vs similar patients without NV-HAP. Due to complexities of identification (has generally been subjective), NV-HAP has been under-appreciated. New definitions, using standardized elements in the electronic record, are emerging and gaining acceptance.
Two promising interventions shown to decrease occurrence by 30-50% are oral care (regular, rigorous, tooth brushing) and mobilization (facilitate early ambulation). Clinical education will be rolling out resources and materials to assist our care delivery team on the importance of these two interventions and the link to NV-HAP reduction. Please be on the lookout for this rollout in July 2022.

Sensory-friendly patient experience
A toolkit of video vignettes and resources to help guide interactions for patients with sensory processing disorders (SPDs), such as autism spectrum disorder, is available. The eight videos address communication strategies, therapeutic interventions and best practices to ensure patient safety, and improve patient satisfaction and outcomes for this vulnerable patient population. These tools are appropriate for clinical and non-clinical audiences. See the huddle card here.
Walk in your world
Your experience matters. Your voice matters.
Every day, we witness the strength and compassion nurses display. It's in the care you provide to patients, the compassion you provide to colleagues, and in the hope you provide to communities.
To gain insight into your incredible work, leaders from across HCA Healthcare are excited to walk in the world of bedside nurses.
